HVF stands for "HARD, VALUABLE, FUN". It was founded as the umbrella project for all my data-focused undertakings. Its core thesis is that thanks to low-cost sensors of every imaginable type, near-ubiquitous wireless broadband, advances in distributed computing and storage, data is becoming our most plentiful, and most under-exploited commodity. The insights mined from it will unlock enormous productivity gains, create efficiencies where none existed before, and meaningfully improve lives. The mission of HVF is to be the catalyst of that transformation.

What's with the name? See this.

Where are you? HVF is located in Jackson Square in San Francisco, away from the hustle of SOMA, but still 10-minute walk from the BART, and the Ferry Building.

What do you actually do? Building on the core thesis, HVF searches relentlessly for opportunities that create value by leveraging data. This takes form of seed and early stage investing, rapid prototyping of internally-generated ideas (some of which develop into companies funded by HVF), getting together with the brightest minds in the many industries that will benefit form the data explosion, looking for (and at) interesting data sets and sources, and just geeking out on data.

Do you incubate companies? No. Projects we are prototyping or developing all start here, but this is not an incubator or a co-working space.

Do you want to invest in my data-driven startup, can I send you my pitch? Thank you for offering, and we very well may! Please email your presentation/one-page/pitch/anything to pitch AT hvf.cc. Please don't be offended if you do not hear back quickly; it takes time and effort to review and understand the pitches we receive, and we review them all.

I am an entrepreneur, will you mentor me? It is flattering to be asked, but no. HVF takes up all available time, and even though entrepreneurial drive is one of the most powerful and mystical forces in my view, I have to remain focused. I do wish you the very best of luck in your entrepreneurial activities.

Will you speak at my event? Most likely no (see above). However, feel free to send a brief description of your event to info AT hvf.cc, and I'll try to get back to you quickly.

Will you join my advisory board? No. As a hard rule, I do not join advisory boards. On a rare occasion I will join a board of directors of a company where I am an investor, but never an advisory board.

Which industries/segments are you looking at right now? Consumer finance, enterprise document security, disease prevention/wellness are currently in our focus. But if it's got data, we want to think about it...
